Q1: What’s the earliest we can have students tell their story? Is there a time when they are too young?
I believe that this is a decision that should be made with parents as well. I am always transparent with parents when I get students creating. Under 13 is completely off limits in terms of having students post online in an open way (unless there is parental consent and I would not add students names and faces. Typically I have students who are 14 and up when teaching this class. Those who are applying for college are often the ones who are more likely willing and interested in creating their online presence as a way to help with their college applications.
Q2: What is the best way to teach students that what goes online stays there forever?
I usually begin with some stories - and examples (with my older students).
I also have students Google themselves. They see things online that either belong to them that they love, that they are embarrassed by or to others who share the same name. We go over how once something is online it’s like a tattoo - it can be washed away with their own presence but will take a lot of work and will always be present.
